Ripple CTO Schwartz Reveals Insights Into AMM Trading StrategyIn a recent post, Ripple CTO, David Schwartz, explained Automated Market Makers (AMMs) – a vital component in the decentralized finance (DeFi) framework, and their trading strategies for profit.Schwartz states that AMMs thrive when an asset is volatile but does not change its price direction much. Schwartz explained further that an asset whose volatility exceeds its long-term trend would have a positive average percentage movement. The SEC, CFTC and IRS all treat digital assets differently, creating considerable uncertainty for fund managers that invest in them. The SEC views many, if not most, tokens as securities, while the CFTC views certain tokens as commodities. The IRS, which has issued limited guidance on the tax treatment of digital asset transactions, treats virtual currencies as “property” and does not consider tokens to be “securities” for purposes of certain sections of the Internal Revenue Code. A Strafford seminar examined the uncertain tax treatment of many common types of tokens, transactions and structures within the digital asset ecosystem, including trading, mining/staking, liquidity pools, lending, stablecoins and investments in digital asset startups, as well as the potential tax treatment of common fund activities involving digital assets. #HFLR #Tax #digitalassets https://lnkd.in/ejvKmKHM

With the d-day for the official implementation of the financial promotion rules for cryptoassets fast approaching, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has published today its feedback on good and poor practices for firms preparing for the upcoming regime (https://lnkd.in/e9DaQEHc). The feedback is the result of several meetings held by the FCA with regulated / registered cryptoasset firms to understand how they are preparing for the implementation of the rules. The FCA has also announced today a modification to its financial promotion rules for both crypto MLR registered firms and authorised firms. Details of the modification and how firms can apply for it are set out in its recently published supervisory letter (https://lnkd.in/efKDxafb)This is relevant for any firm that currently promotes cryptoassets to UK customers or is planning to in the future. The feedback provided is also relevant to any FCA-authorised firm intending to approve cryptoasset financial promotions on behalf of another firm, known as s.21 approvers.

This week I got a lot of questions from Corporate Treasurers about the use of #crypto and #btc. I was reflecting on the piece we just released and wanted to share a few observations:1) Pay attention to how the assets are held and cared for. There are #accounting, #risk, #systems and #tax considerations that are notably different than other asset classes.2) As digital asset use cases and real-world applications converge, the expressed need for integrated systems and platforms becomes essential.3) Incorporation of digital asset processes bears various risks, which emphasizes the importance of implementing and adhering to a broad risk management plan. keep an open mind. Go deep. collaborate among each of the competencies (and sometimes silos) in an organization.4) Don't leave tax and accounting until last (shameless plug). Lots of weekend reading again - my suggestions for this week include the UK Financial Conduct Authority reminding firms that they should be ready for the new #cyptoasset marketing rules from 8 October though they will consider giving firms until 8 January for certain provision such as the cooling off requirements nd also provided a list of good and poor practice which I would really recommend firms have a read (https://lnkd.in/eeim2VuB) . Also this week, International Monetary Fund and Financial Stability Board (FSB) issued their combined view on #policy and #regulatory expectations to identify and respond to financial stability risks associated with crypto assets (https://lnkd.in/erSAbf6z). Much of it wouldn't come as a surprise to those who have been following the announcements to date nevertheless useful data points on current market size and proposals.

Between the approval of the BTC ETFs and changes to the accounting rules reflected in ASU 2023-08, cryptocurrency is at the forefront of modern finance transformation. We're seeing increasing interest from corporate treasury departments in gaining an understanding of the global use case for cryptocurrency adoption.
